Keys to Supporting Gifted & Highly Gifted Individuals (HPI & THPI)

A gifted individual (HPI) doesn’t automatically respect a title, a degree, a background, or even a structured coaching framework.
What they respect above all is the relevance and accuracy of the analysis—of their situation, their problem, and their way of functioning—without any unnecessary complexity.

From there, they will value the depth and authenticity of the interaction.

If they sense a hollow speech or a superficial analysis, the working alliance will struggle to form.
Yet, in any support relationship, this alliance is what builds trust and allows real progress.

Key principles for effectively supporting HPIs & THPIs:

1) Demonstrate a deep, ideally lived, and nuanced understanding of their reality.

Far from clichés, superficial statements, or prepackaged insights about giftedness. A generic or overly theoretical approach will be instantly dismissed by their critical mind.

2) Intellectual connection before emotional connection.

A gifted individual will not be drawn in by an emotional connection that isn’t backed by solid reasoning.
What they seek first is intellectual coherence and rigorous logic in the conversation. If what you’re offering doesn’t hold up under scrutiny, they will immediately see through it.
Emotional connection, when it happens, comes afterwards, as a natural consequence of mutual respect based on relevance and depth of analysis.
Until they recognize true value in the discussion, any attempt at emotional engagement will feel forced or even manipulative.

3) Never underestimate their need for precision and coherence.

HPIs instantly detect inconsistencies and shortcuts. Their need for precision acts as a filter: if the reasoning isn’t solid, they will challenge it.
And if the answers they receive don’t add real value, the alliance may suffer.

4) Offer a dynamic, agile approach—without boxing them in.

What works is a flexible, adaptive approach that takes their uniqueness into account without reducing them to a stereotype.

More often than not, they seek structure and frameworks to help organize their thinking—not because they lack clarity, but because they have too much information to process and channel.

Providing them with relevant models and reference points allows them to direct their intelligence where it matters most, maximizing their efficiency.

"Excellence is the result of consistent improvement."
