Since 2004, revealing what drives you!

Your child is one of the 5 million "Tanguys" (French adults at home) ? Delve deeper into the issue and discover the impact of the orientation model.

To what extent has an orientation typology influenced 5 million Tanguys in France, and how can it be avoided? What is a Tanguy? Let's explore this.

The phenomenon of "Tanguys" in France, a concept derived from the film of the same name, refers to young adults still living with their parents. This phenomenon has seen a significant increase in recent years.

Here are some key figures:

About 6 out of 10 young people aged 18 to 24 still live with their parents. This figure includes both students and young people who have already left the school system.

The number of young adults living with their parents increased by 250,000 between 2013 and 2020, rising from 4.67 million to 4.92 million. This increase is particularly marked among 18-24 year-olds (+13.5%) and 25-34 year-olds (+3.6%).

Young people who are no longer students are more likely to stay with their parents (65%) than students (50%). Difficulties in finding stable employment or accessing independent housing are major factors in this situation.

In Île-de-France, the average age of leaving the parental home was 24 years and 2 months in 2012, compared to 23 years and 4 months in 1999, indicating a growing delay in the emancipation of young people.

These figures highlight the economic and social issues faced by young adults in France, particularly regarding access to housing and professional "integration." Note here that I am not talking about orientation.

Integration means choosing a profession based on where there are opportunities. This is becoming increasingly complicated ideologically for younger generations.

Orientation (in its most ethical sense) is reserved for the privileged. Making a thoughtful and committed choice aligned with one's deep aspirations.

Deconstructing received injunctions and daring to think about one's future outside of implicit expectations.

Identifying one's zones of influence, including family, educational, or social, to regain control over one's choices.

Developing a freely consented project, which is neither a reaction, nor an imitation, nor a disguised assignment.

How is a Tanguy constructed? By an unfortunate mix of an uninspiring integration system, indirect influence, and education.

Education, in this context, refers to the level of laxity or support on issues of orientation, future, ambition, and choices within the family or social circle.

Indirect influence, in this context, is what I define as the theory of "maternalistic orientation," which I introduce here but will be the subject of my next two publications.

Paternalistic orientation will also be explored.

Because in both cases, it is important to know the indicators, at least for those involved in orientation who are deeply interested in the conceptual foundations and effects of their practice.

"Excellence is the result of consistent improvement."
