Work suffering has just been reconfigured: Max-out reorganizes 40 years of workplace mental health.
Max-out is an analytical structure that accomplishes three things that the social sciences rarely manage to articulate simultaneously:

Unify heterogeneous categories (here, workaholism, brown-out, bore-out, burn-out).

Trace back to the generative architecture, rather than merely studying the symptom.

Show the continuity between individual trajectories and systemic logics.
I am not adding a concept alongside the others.
I am proposing a coherent way to solve the equation that many have been working on for decades.
• Dejours saw suffering.
• Maslach saw exhaustion.
• Brown-out pointed to the loss of meaning.
• Bore-out described the void.
• Boltanski saw the managerial recuperation of critique.
• Han saw self-exploitation.
• Honneth saw recognition.
But no one has linked these phenomena within a rigorous, logical and coherent causal architecture.
I demonstrate that what appeared to be four unrelated forms of work suffering is in fact the expression of a single organizing mechanism.
I shift the focus:
❌ from the symptom → ✔️ toward the structure
❌ from individual experience → ✔️ toward organizational conditions
❌ from clinical insight alone → ✔️ toward the sociology of work and adherence
❌ from “distress” → ✔️ toward the institutional production of self-alienation
Max-out offers a meta-reading of 40 years of work psychology, sociology, and clinical approaches to suffering.

but adherence, fueled by their thirst for commitment and their hope for fulfilment.
We are entering a new space of lucidity about work.
