Burnout and stress? This link deserves to be questioned from a scientific perspective.

Articles in the press constantly mixes up "high stress," "professional exhaustion," and "burnout" as if they were synonyms, when in fact they are distinct phenomena.

And on LinkedIn, it’s the same story — we hear a lot of confusion…

Burnout, as defined by Maslach and validated by the WHO, is a work-related syndrome characterized by three dimensions: marked emotional exhaustion, detachment or cynicism toward one’s activity, and a subjective perception of reduced effectiveness and accomplishment.

The stress–burnout link is not that simple:

Scientifically, stress can be a contributing factor to burnout, but it is not a direct causal relationship.

One can experience high stress without developing burnout, and conversely, some cases of burnout occur in environments with relatively low stress.

Models like Karasek’s (demand/control) or Siegrist’s (effort/reward imbalance) offer far more nuanced explanations.

Other biases in the article:

– The percentages may look impressive but lack methodological context.
– The claim of a "40% stress reduction" is presented without solid empirical backing.
– The generational framing itself is debated within occupational psychology.
